Chinese Opera Mask Collection.....

Opera facial make-up originates from totem in ancient times, develops into facial paintings of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, and eventually takes the shape of facial costume of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is a pattern of put-on facial make-up for opera actors and actresses in the stereotype roles of "painted face" and clown. It plays the artistic functions of implying commendatory and derogatory connotations and differentiating benevolence and malevolence, enabling the audience to get a glimpse of the inner world of actors and actresses through their symbolic facial make-up. Gold and silver colors are usually used for gods and spirits. The main color in a facial makeup symbolizes the disposition of the character. Chinese Opera Mythology

In ancient China, Zhao Kuangyin was the first emperor of the Song Dynasty. There had been five boys in his family and he'd been the second eldest. The eldest and youngest brother had both died. Since Zhao's mother, the empress dowager, wanted all her sons to be emperors, she told Zhao Kuangyin that when he died, he must pass the throne to his brother.

After Zhao Kuangyin died, the third son became emperor.

After this he began a reign of unbelievable mischief. He bullied the Dragon Kings of the Oceans into giving him a Magic Wishing Staff, and the clothes to match it. He crossed off his name and the names of all his monkey subjects from the "Monkey File" in the Register of the Quick and the Dead, thus rendering all his original subjects immortal as well. When Heaven sent down people to punish him for these escapades he beat them up and sent them back. Emboldened by this success, he then went to Heaven himself and demanded the title "Great Sage - Equal of Heaven" - which he got (but with no salary to go with it) as it was decided the easiest way to contain his mischief was to trick him into staying in Heaven.
